Reviving the Old Art of the Blowgun

While it might not be as convenient as a stun gun or can of pepper spray, one self-defense weapon that’s available to people is the blowgun. Also known as a blowpipe or blow tube, users should be aware that these weapons do have one major restriction placed on them. Used to blow projectiles such as darts or paintballs, the object can only be blown with as much force as the lungs of the user can muster. So if the person using the blowgun has weak lungs, the projectiles might not be launched too far or too hard.

Used against other humans as well as small game, blowguns have been utilized by a variety of cultures. Most notably, they are common in South American tribes as well as some South East Asian tribes. Again, their most common use was hunting very small animals such as rabbits or even monkeys. Blowguns even made an appearance in North America with the Cherokee tribe. Today, they are more commonly used for sport, and there are even attempts to make it an Olympic event.

Turning The Tables On An Attacker

In all elements of personal protection and self defense, one of the most crucial elements to your advantage is the element of surprise. Even if your attacker is physically stronger or larger than you, if you are able to catch that person off guard, you stand a better chance of escaping the situation unharmed. Of course, there are no guarantees when it comes to being attacked, but the best anybody can do is be prepared and hope they never need that preparation.

For those people who feel comfortable carrying self defense weapons, the element of surprise is best aided by “pretender” self defense products. These are products that look like an ordinary everyday object but are actually a means of self defense. For example, a pen knife is an excellent example of a “pretender.” Although it looks exactly like a normal pen from the outside, it is actually a knife. Other examples include the lipstick pepper spray or the cell phone stun gun. Although we all hope these will sit in our purses and briefcases unused, for many, it is a comfort just knowing they’re there, ready to turn the tables on the bad guys.

Personal safety is a priority for every person. As such, it is important to take measures to ensure that you have the means to protect yourself. For many people, this necessitates employing the use of some sort of self-defense weapon.

One of the best ways to stay safe and stop and attack from a distance is with a stun gun. Stun guns are valuable because they are small and easy to carry and do not cause any long term damage. The guns work by depleting blood sugar and interrupting neurological impulses, temporarily incapacitating the assailant.

Odd Attacks in Seattle

During the summer months in Seattle there was a peculiar assailant tormenting pedestrians on a trail in Ballard. Over a two week span several bikers and walkers here impaled with 4-inch long darts. The attacker apparently was using a blowgun to hit unsuspecting people, seemingly at random.

After conducting a short investigation, Seattle police were unable to make any arrests in the case. Although the guns are legal, it is obviously against the law to use them in this manner. Most states also have restrictions on using blowguns for hunting as well.

Teaching the Assailant a Lesson

As any expert will tell you, the purpose of self-defense is never to inflict great harm to another person. Rather, the idea is to surprise, stun and perhaps temporarily immobilize an attacker, allowing the victim to escape from the altercation unscathed. The most effective self-defense tools share two main characteristics: they must be small enough to be concealable and reliable enough to work every single time.

Telescopic steel batons boast both of those characteristics in spades. Some people are wary of relying on electronics during a time of urgent need. While stun guns seldom malfunction, there’s no way you can go wrong with a steel wand. Bludgeoning an assailant repeatedly with these metal sticks can teach the perpetrator a lesson even as he is rendered powerless to attack.

Fight or Flight?

Whether or not we’d like to admit it, most cities become a lot more dangerous after dark. At times it’s necessary to venture out of your apartment at night, and the last thing you’re looking for is an altercation. If you sense an attacker bearing down on you, the best course of action is to run away. But failing that, you’d be well served to stand your ground and use the element of surprise to throw the assailant for a loop.

An Mtech folding knife is easy to conceal and can spring into action with a moment’s notice. It can be carried discreetly and brought out in the case of an emergency. Oftentimes the mere presence of a knife will be enough to scare off attackers. Remember that criminals prefer to prey on helpless victims. Try taking the offensive and showing your pursuer that you’re anything but helpless.

Within the world of self defense, there are so many products that one can choose from. But the most important thing before purchasing is to determine which of these products will work best for you. As such, you’re going to want something that is entirely intuitive and easy for you to use. If you have to fumble with the device or take time to figure it out in an attack situation, the self defense weapon will essentially be useless for you.

You’ll also want something that’s small and convenient. If you have to haul something cumbersome around in your purse, it’s not very likely that you’ll continue this routine. That’s why so many people are interested in carrying a Kubaton. These are exceedingly easy to use, so many people can use them effectively even when under duress. This makes it an ideal gift for someone looking for that perfect self defense product.

If you feel that your safety is being compromised in places you frequent, it is wise to arm yourself with a weapon that can subdue a potential attacker. A telescopic steel baton is a compact and short device that can extend into a 16 inch steel weapon with just a simple flick of your wrist. This handy weapon is ideal if you want to extend your reach a few inches more. It is made with solid steel that you can also use as a shield from any sharp object that your attacker may use.

This baton comes with a comfortable foam handle for a more controlled grip. If you want to retract the baton, simply exert a strong vertical pressure on the tip, and it will fold back easily to its compact form. This weapon comes with a leather holster for easy carrying.  It’s also an ideal defense weapon against aggressive dogs that may come your way while you jog in your neighborhood.

Many people are concerned about their safety when they work at night.  Some need some form of self-defense weapon that they can use in case of a possible attack.  There are people who carry a folding knife in their pocket as a weapon.

There are different folding knives that you can buy.  They are small and compact but very sharp weapons.  They can easily fit in your pocket because they measure at just about 4.5 inches when folded.  These knives have safety locks so they don’t open up easily.  But they can easily be opened with just one hand.  And when open, they measure at about 7 to 8 inches.

Being a housewife, I am all too familiar with knives – the kitchen knife, the garden knife or the letter knife cutter.  It is obviously a cutting implement.  But what is the folding knife?  It is a very different kind of knife whose special feature is a folding handle that can be opened and closed with one hand.  It is usually a knife for the man. Mind you, he can spend hours perfecting the act of opening and closing it.

Very much present in outdoor camping, fishing or hunting trips, folding knives should not be left home in bonding trips with the son.  It can be small and mighty, secure in a pocket or big and bulky, hanging from the waist.  The best will have a blade made from steel with superior grade.  It will have a handsome handle and a leather sheath. It might even be housed in a beautiful box when not in use.  Because it is special, it will require special care.  The blade should be cleaned and the hinge will need regular oiling.
